The expectation by the end of Y1 is that children will be secure at Phonics Phase 5 or above in decoding and spelling, and decoding fluently and spelling many words automatically by the end of Y2.

This session will give teachers new to the yeargroup an overview of the key priorities and most effective teaching approaches for teaching the English curriculum at Y2. It will include the teaching of decoding and fluency for reading (including organisation for catch-up phonics) alongside the teaching of comprehension through guided and class lessons; securing the transcriptional skills of joined handwriting and spelling as well as developing children’s understanding of written English, including varied sentence construction and punctuation. These will all be considered in the context of age-appropriate, cross-curricular, engaging topics which develop children’s oracy and vocabulary and prepare them to meet the expected standards in English at the end of Y2.

Towards whole class reading - Making the most of reading to children in EYFS/KS1

In the last couple of years, with the increased expectations of the 2014 National Curriculum and the new Y6 reading test, many schools have made a move towards developing more teaching of reading through whole class texts and lessons, especially at upper KS2. This session will look at practical approaches to using time already allocated to reading books to and with groups of children in EYFS and KS1 more effectively to develop pupils’:

  • vocabulary

  • comprehension strategies

  • understanding of texts

  • ability to express their ideas.

This session will give new upper KS2 teachers on an overview of the key priorities and most effective teaching approaches for teaching the English curriculum at Y5/6.  It will cover:

  • the effective teaching of reading, including the teaching of comprehension skills (including some guidance on text selection and test preparation and ) and ways to build children’s stamina and enjoyment in reading challenging texts;

  • developing children’s understanding of written English and supporting their ability to work through the full writing process with increasing independence in planning, drafting, editing and proof-reading.  Particular attention will be given to teaching children to write in more formal registers and the embedding of grammar teaching within this;

 Using pictures to develop inference skills

A number of children struggle to develop effective inference skills to support fluent reading. Pictures can be used to teach the component skills efficiently and enjoyably in whole class lessons as well as in small group sessions and interventions. This session will:

  • demonstrate a variety of approaches to the use of pictures for developing inference skills

  • show how to support the development of children’s language around inference at all ages

  • model the transfer of children’s growing confidence and competence from pictures to written texts

  • provide attendees with a bank of pre-prepared resources to use in class as reading ‘starters’.

This afternoon will give upper KS2 teachers and senior leaders a greater understanding of what is meant by writing at ‘greater depth’ in the statutory assessment system for KS2, and recommend teaching approaches and activities to support higher attaining writers in reaching this standard. It will include:

  • clarification on what is required for an assessment of writing ‘at greater depth within the expected standard’ at the end of KS2

  • training on the grammatical elements within the standard;

  • recommended teaching approaches, activities, writing tasks and provision across the curriculum;

  • tracking progress for these writers across upper KS2
