Teaching cursive handwriting from the start

Target audience: EYFS practitioners, members of SLT

Course leader: Alison Bailey, Pathfinder consultant trainer

Content:

This twilight will look at the principles and practicalities of teaching cursive (‘from the line’) handwriting from EYFS, with the aim of securing fluent joined handwriting for most pupils by the end of KS1.

It will include;

  • research findings supporting this approach

  • recommended teaching strategies and activities

  • linking the teaching of handwriting with spelling

  • ensuring transfer into children’s independent writing

  • recommended resources.

Teaching upper KS2 pupils to write at greater depth

 

Target audience: Y5 and Y6 teachers, SLT

Course leader: Alison Bailey, Pathfinder consultant trainer

Content:

This afternoon will give upper KS2 teachers and senior leaders a greater understanding of what is meant by writing at ‘greater depth’ in the statutory assessment system for KS2, and recommend teaching approaches and activities to support higher attaining writers in reaching this standard. It will include:

  • clarification on what is required for an assessment of writing ‘at greater depth within the expected standard’ at the end of KS2

  • training on the grammatical elements within the standard;

  • recommended teaching approaches, activities, writing tasks and provision across the curriculum;

  • tracking progress for these writers across upper KS2

Please bring with you work from children who have the potential to reach the ‘greater depth’ standard.

Teachers should bring with them:

  • all the evidence underpinning their teacher assessment for writing for pupils whose assessments they wish to moderate

  • copies of the 2017 statutory assessment requirements and exemplification (as available)
